Stars Speak Out On Impact Of Unexploded Bombs On Civilians In Vietnam

first_imgForty years ago on August 15, 1973, the U.S. military ceased all military actions and airstrikes in Vietnam, ending the war for the United States. Four decades later, the war is still not over. Unexploded bombs and landmines left over from that conflict still claim lives and limbs.Since 1973 there have been over 40,000 civilian deaths and 60,000 injuries. Just this month a nine-year-old boy is lucky to be alive after he was burned from head to toe and broke his arm from an encounter with a piece of war-era unexploded ordnance. To mark this anniversary with a call for action and more funding to address this issue, a group of celebrities and other notable professionals are collectively saying, “40 Years is Too Long, But Not Too Late.” They are supporting a campaign to benefit Mines Advisory Group America (MAG) and Clear Path International (CPI) in their work to remove unexploded ordnance from Vietnamese soil and assist accident survivors. The event will kick off with a promotion on Reddit.com during a visit to Quang Tri Province, Vietnam by actor Jonathan Goldsmith, the man who plays Dos Equis iconic character “The Most Interesting Man in the World.” Thanks to Cathay Pacific Airlines, Jonathan will perform a demolition with MAG America and visit with landmine accident survivors with Clear Path International.Video: Jonathan Goldsmith, Man who Plays Most Interesting Man in the World, For Landmine and Bomb Victims“The Vietnamese children, the parents and the grandparents have had to live with these bombs on a daily basis,” Goldsmith said. “They have lived with this fear for over 40 years. This is a man-made problem and I think we have an obligation to do what we can for future generations. I am glad to help.”Folk singer Nanci Griffith has also been an activist for landmine clearance for many years and travelled to Vietnam for the 30th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War in 2005 to highlight the continuing landmine and unexploded ordnance issue there. As we are now at the 40th anniversary of the U.S. military withdrawal, Nanci urges, “I have always believed people need to stand up and make their voices heard to create change. And 40 years is just too long for any person committed to peace to watch children still die from the remnants of a war we left so long ago. Help support this campaign for Vietnam.”John Densmore, drummer for the legendary rock group, The Doors, along with John Perry Barlow, lyricist for the Grateful Dead, and Ben Taylor, son of folk rock artists James Taylor and Carly Simon, will also be promoting the campaign with online promotions later in the month. For more information, click here.MAG America has cleared over 7 million square meters of land contaminated by unexploded ordnance in Vietnam since 1999, benefitting more than 1.8 million people who can now farm their land, build their homes and let their children play safely without fear of injury or death from accidental explosions. MAG America has worked in over 35 countries around the world clearing landmines, unexploded ordnance, and other remnants of conflict. For more information go to MAGAmerica.org or facebook.com/magamerica.Clear Path International has been working to address the unexploded ordnance issue in Vietnam since 2000 and has helped thousands of Vietnamese recover from accidents involving unexploded ordnance. Millions lather up to save lives as UN observes Global Handwashing Day

Nearly 200 million people from over 70 countries participated today in United Nations events marking the first ever Global Handwashing Day, held to raise awareness about how a lack of effective sanitation and poor hygiene practices can bring death and disease.Handwashing with soap – particularly before eating and after using the toilet – is one of the most effective and inexpensive ways to prevent diarrhoeal disease and pneumonia, which together are responsible for almost 3.5 million child deaths every year, the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) stated in a press release.Additionally, UNICEF said handwashing with soap by birth attendants and mothers can increase newborn survival rates by up to 44 per cent.UNICEF Senior Adviser for Sanitation and Hygiene Theref Dooley reiterated the need for awareness of the importance of handwashing.“We hope an ordinary act such as handwashing becomes recognized as an extraordinary act that can save lives,” said Ms. Dooley. The inaugural event focuses on children and schools, with the intention that children can act as agents of change by taking these lessons home to their families and communities.“We hope to make handwashing fun. For children to participate it needs to be fun and then they will wash their hands by choice,” stated the UNICEF envoy.Global Handwashing Day activities across the globe include the release of a catchy educational song by UNICEF ambassadors and popular children’s entertainers, The Wiggles, to help motivate millions of children worldwide by transforming the mundane act of handwashing into an enjoyable habit. In India, where more than 100 million children participated in festivities, international cricket star Sachin Tendulkar joined forces with UNICEF to urge children to wash their hands for better health and hygiene. The King of Cambodia Norodom Sihamoni also took part today washing his hands, while the President of Madagascar Marc Ravalomanana synchronized his involvement with schoolchildren across the country all washing their hands at midday. In total, 77 countries participated, including the Philippines, Ghana, Pakistan, Tajikistan and South Africa.Global Handwashing Day is an initiative of the Public Private Partnership for Handwashing which brings together multilateral organizations local community groups and private sector business for the social marketing campaign.Spearheaded by UNICEF, other partners include the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the World Bank Water and Sanitation Programme, Procter and Gamble, and Unilever.“By combining all sectors we can sell handwashing. It’s not just about selling soap as it is about selling handwashing,” stated Ms. Dooley. With 2008 marking the UN International Year of Sanitation, Global Handwashing Day will support its ethos to promote improved sanitation and hygiene practices. 15 October 2008Nearly 200 million people from over 70 countries participated today in United Nations events marking the first ever Global Handwashing Day, held to raise awareness about how a lack of effective sanitation and poor hygiene practices can bring death and disease. read more

WatchCanada still aiming for intensive NAFTA talks even though Trumps in no

OTTAWA — The federal government is still expecting NAFTA talks to accelerate this summer even though U.S. President Donald Trump says he’s in no rush to sign a deal until after the U.S. midterm elections this fall.A government official familiar with the plan says now that Mexico’s presidential election is done, Ottawa wants to restart talks as soon as possible, even though Trump says he won’t sign a new deal until after U.S. voters go to the polls in November. The effort to restart stalled negotiations on the North America Free Trade Agreement comes with Canada and the U.S. swapping punitive tariffs on imports in an ongoing cross-border trade fight.NAFTA talks to get a jumpstart from Mexico election, adviser predicts, with a deal possible this yearCanada should reconsider milk pricing policy to appease U.S., Quebec premier says‘We will not back down’: Ottawa strikes back at U.S. with tariff targetsForeign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland has said she spoke with U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer six times last week and that she expects NAFTA talks to move into a higher gear this summer.Mexican president-elect Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador says he supported renegotiating NAFTA, and wants his own team of experts to be part of the talks before he takes office Dec. 1.The official, speaking on condition of anonymity about a matter they weren’t authorized to discuss publicly, says until Lopez Obrador is sworn in, members of the current Mexican administration will continue to serve as the country’s lead NAFTA negotiators. On Monday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke with Lopez Obrador by phone, and the two discussed “mutually beneficial economic and trading relationship between the two countries, and their shared priority of updating the North American Free Trade Agreement for the betterment of their peoples,” Trudeau’s office said in a statement. In an interview that aired Sunday on Fox News, Trump said he could quickly sign a revised NAFTA with Canada and Mexico, but instead wants to land a better deal for the U.S. Asked about the timing of an agreement, Trump said: “I want to wait until after the election.”— with files from Associated Press read more

Although unique opportunity missed Cyprus plan remains on table Annan says

United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan says in a new report released today that his plan to enable a united Cyprus to join the European Union remains on the table but that he will not undertake any new initiatives to reach a deal until he sees that the political will necessary for a successful outcome exists.”I have already indicated publicly that I do not believe that such an opportunity will occur any time soon. I do believe, however, that it would be a great step backward if the plan as such were to simply wither away,” the Secretary-General says in a report to the Security Council on his more than three-year mission of good offices in Cyprus, referring to a comprehensive settlement plan first put forward late last year.Last month, the Secretary-General met with the Greek Cypriot leader, Tassos Papadopoulos, and the Turkish Cypriot leader, Rauf Denktash, in The Hague in a failed last-minute bid to gain their approval of his proposals, which would have led to the holding of separate and simultaneous referenda in time for a reunited Cyprus to sign the EU Treaty of Accession on 16 April. In his analysis of what he described as a “unique opportunity” missed, the Secretary-General says Mr. Denktash “bears prime responsibility” for the failure of this latest UN effort to resolve the decades-long problem. “Except for a very few instances, Mr. Denktash by and large declined to engage in negotiation on the basis of give and take,” he writes. “This greatly complicated my efforts to accommodate not only the legitimate concerns of principle but also the concrete and practical interests of the Turkish Cypriots.”However, Mr. Annan also notes the failure of the Greek Cypriot leadership to explain to the public that the choice was not between “a compromise along the lines of a plan that I put forward and a better one, but between that and no settlement at all.”One of the obstacles to solving the Cyprus problem has been the perception on both sides that this was a zero-sum game, the Secretary-General observes. “I am strongly convinced that, had it been accepted, my proposal would have created a win-win situation,” he says. “I am equally, and sadly, convinced that while the current outcome in the short term my be a greater setback for some than for others, ultimately all are losers in the failure of the recent effort. It is in the interests of all – Greek Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots, Greece and Turkey – that there should be a settlement of the Cyprus problem.” read more

South Sudan tested enormously in first year of independence Vice President tells

“Our nascent nation has been tested enormously in its first year of independence,” Vice President Machar said in his address to the 67th Assembly’s General Debate, which began on Tuesday at UN Headquarters in New York. South Sudan became the world’s newest country on 9 July 2011. Its birth was the culmination of a six-year peace process which helped bring an end to the long-running conflict between South Sudan and Sudan, which it was formerly a part of.However, the peace between the two countries has been threatened in recent months by armed clashes along their common border and outstanding post-independence issues that have yet to be resolved.“We have been tested by conflicts within and beyond our borders,” Vice President Machar said. “We have been tested by severe economic hardship; and we have been tested by the revelation of severe abuse of the public trust and funds resulting partly from malpractices and lack of capacity.”He added, “The Government is taking serious corrective measures and institutional capacity building to address this issue in order to restore public confidence.”Regarding security, Vice President Machar said the country is currently facing security threats in the form of armed militia groups creating insecurity and undermining the young democracy. The Government has accorded the highest priority in reaching peaceful resolution to these internal conflicts, and four of the armed militia groups have laid down their arms and integrated voluntarily into the country’s national army and civilian life. “We believe that internal and external security of our nation is a prerequisite in having meaningful economic development and social progress,” said the Vice President.“While we are working tirelessly towards achieving and maintaining peace within our borders, critical unresolved issues remain between South Sudan and Sudan, including border demarcation, citizenship rights, the status of Abyei, and oil-related issues,’ he stated. “The lack of progress in these post-independence issues has been posing threats to peace and stable relations between the two countries.”Vice President Machar’s address comes on the same day that Presidents Omar Al-Bashir of Sudan and Salva Kiir of South Sudan signed agreements on security, the common border and economic relations during their talks in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa.“We are hopeful that the new agreement[s] with the Sudan will lead to the resolution of our differences on security, borders and the use of petroleum infrastructure. It is envisaged that if each side upholds its part of this agreement, the most significant causes of dispute between our two countries will have been amicably resolved,” the Vice President said.He added that South Sudan cannot achieve its goals alone: “We need continued support from friends, partners and the international community. We are confident that together we shall overcome the challenges ahead.” Vice President Machar is one of scores of world leaders and other high-level officials presenting their views and comments on issues of individual national and international relevance at the Assembly’s General Debate, which ends on 1 October. read more

Football What we learned about Ohio State from the Spring Game

Ohio State redshirt senior offensive lineman Brady Taylor (79) protects redshirt junior quarterback Joe Burrow in the first half of the 2018 Spring Game in Ohio Stadium April 14. Gray beat Scarlet 37-14. Credit: Jack Westerheide | Photo EditorOhio State entered spring practice with one focal question: who will take snaps at quarterback in the fall? But it had many other questions to answer, including who will be snapping the ball to the yet-to-be-determined quarterback. Here are five things we learned after the Spring Game.Luke Farrell enters summer as starting tight endLast season, Rashod Berry backed up Marcus Baugh. The now-redshirt junior Berry entered the spring with the first shot at replacing the now-graduated Baugh, but he could not hold off redshirt sophomore Luke Farrell. “As of we finished spring practice, [Farrell will] be the starting tight end at Ohio State,” head coach Urban Meyer said following the Spring Game. “He had a very good spring.”Despite the declaration of confidence, Meyer stopped short of declaring the former four-star prospect as the Week 1 starter. He said Farrell has earned the right to call himself the starter for now, but must retain the position in the fall. Berry, who did not play in the Spring Game due to suffering two “stingers,” and redshirt sophomore Jake Hausmann will make a run for the job. But Farrell’s stiffest competition might come from incoming freshman Jeremy Ruckert. The second-ranked tight end in the 2018 class by the 247Sports composite rankings, Ruckert might be the most talented player at his position the moment he steps on campus. No answer at linebacker, but that’s not necessarily a negativeThe Buckeyes have an abundance of possibilities on the second level of their defense. Not only do they have many different players ready to step up, but many of their linebackers can play both inside or outside.Though redshirt sophomore Tuf Borland suffered an Achilles injury early in the spring, he seems to be the only player expected to be in the starting rotation at middle linebacker. Baron Browning, Keandre Jones, Malik Harrison and Pete Werner each played substantial snaps in the Spring Game and have a shot to start. Dante Booker had shoulder surgery and missed spring practice, but will have a chance at reclaiming a spot. He’s started the opening week the past two seasons but lost his role due to injury each year.Despite lacking a starter at two linebacker spots, neither defensive coordinator Greg Schiano nor Meyer seemed overly concerned about entering the summer without much clarity.“I think the hard thing is going to be to decide who the three starting linebackers are. Because we’re going to move guys around to get the three best guys on the field to start the game,” Schiano said after the Spring Game. “I have a feeling that we may even be able to play more than three, the way guys have worked this spring. Now if they continue to excel, there’s no rule that says you can’t play more than three.”The youthful group of linebackers could take a page from the cornerbacks and rotate more than the three starters.Brady Taylor: the Billy Price replacementThe past two centers at Ohio State — Billy Price and Pat Elflein — won the Rimington Trophy, awarded to the best center in the nation. Though Price’s replacement will not be expected to be the country’s best, a precedence of excellence has been set. After the Spring Game, Meyer revealed his decision on who will have the first shot in the fall with the first team.“Brady Taylor is leaving spring ball as our starting center,” Meyer said. “I’m not saying that’s the way it is for the fall yet, but it’s pretty close. He did very good.”A redshirt senior, Taylor has a wealth of experience. Early in spring practice, Meyer expressed concern about the center position, but Taylor played well enough for the head coach to make the decision of Taylor over redshirt freshman Josh Myers by the end of camp.Thayer Munford left tackle?A two-year starter at right tackle, it made sense that Isaiah Prince would slide over to man left tackle as a senior. But it might not be that simple.Sophomore Thayer Munford lined up at left tackle while Prince was right tackle during the opening drive for the first-team offense during the Spring Game. They stayed at the positions for a while before Prince played a single series as left tackle. After the scrimmage, Meyer said Ohio State has not chosen which player will play either tackle spot.“We’ve done both and that decision hasn’t been made yet,” Meyer said. “But Isaiah’s been playing a lot of left too. And I think we’re just trying to get that rotation, who’s going to be the third tackle.”Jaylen Harris nearing receiver rotationAll six of Ohio State’s starting receivers from last season returned, minimizing the possibility that younger wideouts would be able to earn playing time. But earlier in the spring, wide receivers coach Zach Smith emphatically stated the best players would play regardless of their experience levels.Sophomore wide receiver Jaylen Harris has made a case to break the crowded rotation this spring. He ended it with a three-catch, 39-yard performance in the Spring Game and caught a touchdown from Dwayne Haskins.“He had some plays today and he had a very productive spring,” Meyer said. “I’d imagine he’s very close to being in the rotation.” read more

Coconut oil is pure poison that increases cholesterol says Harvard professor

Companies that make the product were blamed for popularising the idea that it comes loaded with nutritional goodness.Heart UK’s dietetic adviser Linda Main said: “Consumers are being led to believe that coconut oil is good for us.“We talk about it being an oil but if you go into any shop in the UK and look, it is solid, it is saturated.“I think it is just a very good marketing campaign by importers, producers of coconut oil, I don’t honestly know how it has got to this sort of stage.“Having talked to one celebrity chef, he was approached by an importer of coconut oil and encouraged to use it in his recipes.” Want the best of The Telegraph direct to your email and WhatsApp? Sign up to our free twice-daily  Front Page newsletter and new  audio briefings. Coconut oil, championed by clean-eating advocates as a healthy alternative to butter, is “pure poison” that increases cholesterol, a Harvard professor has said.Dr Karin Michels, an epidemiology specialist from the US institution’s school of public health, claimed the ingredient was “one of the worst foods you can eat”.Sales of coconut oil have surged in the UK, with £23.5 million spent on the trendy product in the last 12 months, up 454 per cent on five years ago, according to consumer analysts Kantar.Celebrity endorsements have helped fuel its popularity, with stars such as Gwyneth Paltrow and the Kardashian sisters enthusing about coconut oil as both a dietary supplement and beauty product. Its “superfood” reputation stems from claims it contains a “good” kind of saturated fat which some believe boosts good cholesterol. But in her recent lecture titled “Coconut Oil and Other Nutritional Errors” at the University of Freiburg, Dr Karin Michels claimed that even lard is healthier. Her scathing remarks were followed by a series of warnings from British health organisations about the fad’s damaging potential.Heart UK, a charity that supports people with cholesterol issues, said callers to their hotline with unusually high cholesterol levels were often found to have recently introduced coconut oil to their diet. In an interview with E! News Gwyneth Paltrow said: “I use coconut oil a lot. I do on my face, on my skin and in my cooking.”Credit:Michael Stewart/Getty Images Gwyneth Paltrow attends the 11th Annual God's Love We Deliver Golden Heart Awards at Spring Studios on October 16, 2017 Evidence indicates that the oil can help boost HDL cholesterol, which clears the arteries of LDL – or bad cholesterol. But the high saturated fat levels – around one-third higher than butter at approximately 86 per cent – means it also drives up LDL cholesterol, which increases coronary heart disease and stroke risk.“This completely throws out the benefits of the effects on HDL,” Ms Main said. The British Heart Foundation agreed there was “not enough good-quality research” supporting any claim that coconut oil is superior to other saturated fats. Unsaturated fats such as vegetable oil, olive oil and sunflower oil and their equivalent spreads were said to be a more effective way to lower cholesterol levels. The charity’s senior dietician Victoria Taylor said: “For the time being, if you like the taste of coconut oil, then, as with butter, it’s fine to use it every now and then. However, it’s best to restrict yourself to small amounts and use unsaturated oils as an everyday choice instead.” read more

first_imgAs promised, Sony Ericsson shed more light on its upcoming Xperia Play–the Android handset formerly (but actually, not really ever) known as the PlayStation Phone. The handset is getting the decidedly broad release date of spring 2011. Arguably even more interesting than than that vague release date is the fact that this eagerly awaited Gingerbread (Android 2.3) handset will be arriving on Verizon, and it appears to be an exclusive on that carrier in the US–at least at launch.Need more specy goodness? Here you go: Snapdragon 1Ghz processor, graphical enhancements via the Andreno 205 processor, four inch screen, 5.0MP camera, 60fps playback. More info to follow, surely.last_img

HTC Android phones leak personal data to any app with Internet permissions

first_imgIf you are running a HTC Android smartphone with the latest updates applied, chances are your personal data is freely accessible to any app you have given network access to in the form of full Internet permissions. This vulnerability isn’t a backdoor or some inherent flaw in Android, it is instead HTC failing to lock down its data sharing policies used in the Tell HTC software users have to allow or disallow on their phone. The problem being, not only is your data vulnerable when Tell HTC is turned on, it’s just as vulnerable when it is turned off.Tell HTC is meant to be software that collects anonymous information about how you use your phone. It is included as an app called HtcLogger.apk, and sits there collecting a lot of data about you and your phone usage. This information includes user accounts, network connection details, last GPS location, phone numbers used, SMS data, system logs, what’s in memory, running processes, installed apps, battery details, and a heck of a lot more. A typical log for HtcLogger.apk can be over 3MB in size, all of which is text, highlighting just how much detail it can contain. If this data was only accessible to HTC alone, then there would still be some limited concern, however, you can turn it off as this is an option given to you (see video below). The problem is, Android Police discovered this information is collected regardless of your preferences and is accessible by any app with the right permissions. As the video demonstrates, if an app has Internet permissions the data is accessible to it. That doesn’t mean any apps are collecting this data, but they easily can and send it to a remote server because they have Internet permissions. The handsets this is confirmed as being an issue on include the Evo 3D, Evo 4G, and Thunderbolt when running a stock Sense install. However, any HTC phone running the same configuration may also be vulnerable.HTC has been told about this problem several days ago, but has not commented on it to the reporter or publicly yet. It is hoped that a fix is already in the works, but now the vulnerability is publicly known about, HTC Android phone owners need to be particularly careful about what new apps they install or updates to existing apps they apply. If you want to be extra safe you can navigate to /system/app/HtcLoggers.apk on your phone and delete the file.Read more at Android Policelast_img read more

PS3 price drop expected this week PS4 to stream PS3 games

first_imgOn Wednesday Sony will hold its first PlayStation meeting since 2011 and with it many expect the company to reveal the PlayStation 4 console. But there’s another announcement Sony is expected to make this week about the PS3. Specifically, it’s going to drop in price significantly.Michael Pachter, the well-known games industry analyst at Wedbush Securities, believes that the day after the PlayStation meeting we should expect Sony to drop the price of the PS3. The 500GB machine currently sells for $299, but Pachter believes Sony will drop that to just $199.Such a huge drop would usually seem unlikely, but if Sony is launching the PS4 this year it will want to sell as many PS3 consoles as it can before the focus shifts to the new machine. The side effect of that is Microsoft will most likely have to react quickly and drop the price of the Xbox 360 to match or even undercut the PS3, but we may be waiting until E3 to see that happen.Picking up a cheaper PS3 may be desirable for those with older versions of the console, but it looks likely the PS4 will retain backwards compatibility. The Wall Street Journal has heard that Sony will leverage its Gaikai technology to allow PS3 games to be streamed to the new console without needing to include any compatible hardware. By doing so it should be possibly to play all PS3 games while keeping the cost of the new machine down, with the price expected to be around $430 at launch. The one prerequisite to that working will be the availability of a reliable Internet connection.last_img read more

More mental health support needed for older Greek Australians

first_imgAs the Greek Australian population ages, more support around mental health care is needed, says Acting CEO of Fronditha aged care, Jim Scantsonihas. Because our population is aging, there’s a higher rate of dementia.Scantsonihas said dementia is a big issue for Fronditha Care – formerly the Australian Greek Society for Care of the Elderly. “Because our population is aging, there’s a higher rate of dementia,” he said. “It’s certainly increasing, and the government has to start preparing.” The comments come as The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists released a report urgently calling for improved mental health services to meet the needs of a rapidly aging population in the wider Australian community. Scantsonihas said Fronditha has two full dementia-specific units, and called on the government to help with the cost of added staffing for dementia patients. “There’s not enough funding provided to look after these people,” he said. He also called for increased awareness around dementia in Greek Australian community. He said dementia comes in stages, and families should seek assistance early, rather than waiting till they’re in a crisis mode. “The Greek culture is, you look after your own,” he said. “So we’ve got husbands, wives, daughters, sons, looking after the family in their home.” “But while they’re trying to do that, they can miss the signs.” Scantsonihas said the most difficult part is elderly couples living in their home where one partner has dementia. “They need support to stay in their home as long as possible,” he said. Dr Maria Tomasic, President of The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists said today, 13% of Australians are over 65. But by 2051 that will double to 26%. “We will have more people living longer with mental health problems, more people developing mental health problems in old age and more people with chronic diseases and mental health concerns,” she said. UPDATE Trump Plan Offers Citizenship Path To 18 Million Immigrants

first_img___Manuel Balce Ceneta/APPresident Donald Trump is proposing a plan that provides a path to citizenship for 1.8 million of the so-called “Dreamer” immigrants, tighter restrictions on legal immigration and $25 billion in border security, the White House said, putting forward an outline likely to find resistance from some of Trump’s conservative allies.Senior White House officials offered a preview of Trump’s immigration framework Thursday, casting it as a compromise that could pass the Senate. The proposal represents a reversal for the president, who once promised to eliminate an Obama-era program protecting immigrants brought to the U.S. as children and now in the country illegally. He later urged lawmakers to extend the program, but maintained he was not considering citizenship. The Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program currently covers roughly 690,000 of those younger immigrants, about half the number who qualified for the program according to independent estimates. Trump’s plan would expand this further by adjusting some of the requirements, officials said, but they did not offer specific details. It would not allow parents of those immigrants to seek lawful status, the officials said.On Wednesday, Trump said he was open to a pathway to citizenship for younger immigrants brought illegally to the U.S. as children. “We’re going to morph into it,” Trump told reporters. “It’s going to happen, at some point in the future, over a period of 10 to 12 years.”Trump ended the DACA program in September, setting a March 5 deadline for Congress to provide legal protections or the program’s recipients would once again be subject to deportation. The officials said Trump would only sign legislation providing those protections if the other immigration changes he is proposing are implemented. The officials spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to publicly discuss the plan before its release.Trump had previously ruled out the idea of citizenship for the Dreamers, saying in September: “We’re not looking at citizenship. We’re not looking at amnesty. We’re looking at allowing people to stay here.”Trump had deferred to a bipartisan, bicameral group of lawmakers to craft an immigration proposal, saying he would sign whatever they passed. But as talks on Capitol Hill broke down — in part because of controversy Trump ginned up using vulgar language to describe other countries — the White House decided to offer its own framework. The release follows on concerns raised by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell that the president had not sufficiently laid out his priorities. One official said the Thursday release represents a plan for the Senate, with the administration expecting a different bill to pass the House.Democrats said they were heartened Thursday by Trump’s support, while Republicans were more cautious.Moderate Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., said he was “very encouraged” by Trump’s surprising words, which the president made late Wednesday in impromptu comments to reporters.Among Republicans, Oklahoma Sen. James Lankford said he supports the citizenship pathway Trump described. Sen. Mike Rounds, R-S.D., called Trump’s words “positive” and said Trump’s description “gives us a better sense” of his views, but added, “We have a long way to go yet.” Frederic J. Brown/AFP/Getty ImagesA U.S. Border Patrol officer stands near prototypes of President Trump’s proposed border wall in San Diego last November. In recent weeks, President Trump has told lawmakers he would sign any immigration measure that Congress sent him but also flatly rejected a draft of a deal negotiated by six senators. Now, the White House is laying out the specific elements it wants to see from a bill offering permanent protection for people in the expiring Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.A one-page memo sent to congressional Republicans Thursday afternoon backs a 10- to 12-year path to citizenship for not just the roughly 700,000 enrolled in the expiring DACA program but for other “DACA-eligible illegal immigrants” who are in the U.S. illegally and were brought to the country as children. The White House estimates that could cover up to 1.8 million people. In exchange, the White House wants an immigration measure to include $25 billion for a border wall, though the memo concedes that border security “takes a combination of physical infrastructure, technology, personnel, [and] resources.” In other words, not necessarily the coast-to-coast physical structure on the Southern border that Trump promised at campaign rallies. The White House also wants changes to the legal immigration system, including policies that prioritize family members “to spouses and minor children only.” And the administration wants to completely eliminate the visa lottery system, which the memo says “is riddled with fraud and abuse and does not serve the national interest.”The memo mirrors the broad priorities that White House legislative affairs director Marc Short, press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders and other Trump administration officials have been outlining for weeks. But as President Trump has repeatedly shifted his public statements on any immigration measure, congressional leaders have been increasingly anxious for more clarification on what the White House wants from an eventual bill.White House Framework on Immigration: Sharelast_img read more

Those crazy whispers from the original Xbox Dashboard are actually Apoll

first_imgAnyone who owned an original Xbox Best Price at Amazon remembers the first time they were alone in the room with the console while it was sitting on the dashboard doing nothing. The silence of whatever you were doing was broken by crazy whispers, and it didn’t take long to figure out that those whispers were coming from the television thanks to your Xbox. It turns out those sounds weren’t just randomly generated sounds on a loop. What you were hearing was a modified recording of Apollo mission conversations, which are publicly available for anyone to listen to.This revelation came courtesy of Microsoft’s Larry Hyrb not long ago, but the most fascinating part of this news is that those source recordings are publicly available to anyone. The Public Domain Review has a collection of five different conversations from the Apollo missions that can be played right from their website. The Xbox Team took bits of those recordings, tweaked them a bit, and set them loose on your psyche when you least expected it.No such cleverness exists in the Xbox One, which is a shame given the extra tech that is available now. Microsoft could make it so whispers start up whenever motion is detected through Kinect, or when it looks like there’s only one person in the room at the time. Then again, given the privacy concerns with the Xbox One $150.00 at ebay, that’s probably not the best way to keep customers. It looks like this mystery has been solved, and even better you can go take a nostalgic wander through the Apollo conversations.last_img read more
